This afternoon I decided to end my soccer career. This evening I decided that I was going to try sprints tomorrow. This is a prime example of why I need to officially stop playing. I’ll let you know how sprints go.
I swear I’m not PMSing.
I wish there was more literature about this sort of thing, intellectualism is such a good coping mechanism.

The first is 183lbs (my max) and the last is 176lbs. Its not not everything, but its something. Between each of the first three pictures I had months where I lost all my muscle because I was unable to walk/workout. My most recent min weight was 165 about a month after my last knee surgery. I lost all my quad muscles and turned into a big ball of blubber. I looked much worse than any of these pictures at that weight and its been a fight to get my muscle back.

In some sense, a person is her wounds. A sapling, planted beside a supportive stake that the gardener neglects to remove, will grow around the stake. The stake’s presence will injure the growing tree; the tree will adapt by distorting its “natural” shape to accommodate the stake. But the mature tree will be the shape it has taken; it cannot be “cured” of the injury, the injury is an intrinsic aspect of its nature.

I find myself often times unrecognizable from year to year and sometimes from month to month. You know when you are with a group of friends having a really great conversation and in a moment of clarity try to figure out how you got on the current topic? I feel like that is my life. I will pause and reflect and try and track the conversation back to its origin. Try and find the stakes.

This is a really lovely metaphor. I think of a sapling being braided. At the time, the bends seem huge and painful, and they are. As time passes they weave is just how the tree grows. It makes it beautiful in a different way than it ever could have been.

I think of my scars. I think of my surgeries. All just steaks and I am tracing back the conversation to see how I grew around them.

Love the struggle

“The great competitors I have played for, coached, and admired have shared a joy derived from the struggle itself- the journey, the contest. They have done so because only in that supreme effort is there an opportunity to summon your best, a personal greatness that cannot be diminished, dismissed, or derided because of a final score or bottom line.

Competitive Greatness is not defined by victory nor denied by defeat. It exists in the effort that precedes those two imposters as well as their accomplices: fame, fortune, and power- measurements of success I rejected long ago.”
